The labia minora are the small flaps of tissue that surround the vaginal opening. There are several reasons why a woman might consider labiaplasty surgery, or altering of these tissue flaps. These reasons can range from wanting a better appearance to needing relief from discomfort.
Here are some of the top questions we get asked about labiaplasty in our NYC & Long Island centers.
Is Labiaplasty Right For Me?
In some women, the labia are different lengths from the time of birth. One can be extremely long while the other is normally sized, for example. In this case, if the size difference causes insecurity during intimacy, labiaplasty may be a good choice for her.
For some other women, when the labia are too long, they can fold, pinch, and get caught in underclothing. This can become even more pronounced when exercising or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. In extreme cases, pain and discomfort during sex can be a main reason for a woman to seek this procedure for herself.
When childbirth, weight gain, or aging have caused the labia to stretch out and get larger or longer than normal, labiaplasty may be the ideal procedure to correct this.
These cases can either be cosmetic in nature or help the patient have less discomfort during daily activities.
How is Labiaplasty Performed?
Dr. Elie Harouche is our double board certified plastic surgeon that performs all labiaplasty in NYC and Long Island at our centers. He has decades of experience and produces beautiful results for his patients.
You will receive IV sedation for this procedure with local anesthesia used for numbing so you do not feel any pain. Dr. Harouche will measure the labia in order to decide how much tissue to remove in order to give you the appearance you want.
Next, the labia will be trimmed using the incision preference that best fits your needs. Dr. Harouche will use dissolvable sutures to close the wounds and allow you to heal without needing to return for suture removal.
