Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is one of the most rewarding procedures we perform at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York.
Why? Because the results are immediate: loss of excess skin, tightening of the abdominal muscles, and a flatter belly.
Of course, to see full results patients must wait a period of about 12-16 weeks. Read on to learn what you can expect after abdominoplasty surgery.
Post-Op Tummy Tuck Swelling & Discomfort
When you wake up from surgery, you’ll notice discomfort in your abdominal area. A mini tummy tuck will result in less discomfort and a faster recovery time versus a full tummy tuck. This is because a mini tummy tuck requires a smaller incision and does not involve the abdominal muscles.
A full procedure, however, includes tightening of the entire rectus abdominus muscles (the vertical muscles that run from your sternum to pubic bone). This also requires a half-moon shaped incision that stretches from hip bone to hip bone.
The other differentiation with a full tummy tuck is that the belly button is repositioned on the abdominal wall. The actual umbilicus (belly button) is not moved.
Why this is done: Due to the fact that the abdominal skin is pulled downward and the excess skin is removed from the bottom, the belly button must be pulled through the abdominal skin in its new position.
Often times, Jackson-Pratt drains are placed in the ends of the incision so that swelling can be drained from the area. This lessens the chance of infection and helps speed healing while reducing swelling-related discomfort.
Compression Garments, Exercise, and Getting Back to Life
Wearing a compression garment is a must! Your plastic surgeon will let you know which type to wear or will provide you with a garment prior to surgery. It is imperative that you wear this garment for the following reasons:
- It reduces swelling
- It holds your skin in its new position
- It helps ease discomfort
- It helps support your muscles & incision at all times
Exercise is so important, not just in life but right after surgery. We recommend walking around the house for a few minutes several times a day beginning on the night of surgery. Moving around helps get blood and fluids moving, which can speed healing and reduce swelling.
Your doctor will let you know when you can lift things again and when you can get back to the gym. Usually, light activity is OK after two weeks (walking). Strenuous activity is not recommended until at least 6-8 weeks after surgery.
You must get clearance from your doctor before engaging in any type of physical activity to avoid inuring yourself or damaging your surgical wounds. Thoroughly follow all of your doctor’s post-op tummy tuck instructions.
