Many patients visit our practice wondering what they can do about their stomach. They have been dieting and exercising, but they can’t seem to see the results in their abdominal area. They desperately want their abs to show, which they have been working so diligently on for many months.
It’s true that you will not be able to see all of the work you’ve been putting into your abdominals if you still have a layer of fat or skin covering the muscles.
While the abdominal muscles have become stronger and bigger, they won’t be visible through the stubborn fat and/or excess skin. For many people, the only way to get rid of that is through liposuction and/or tummy tuck.
Patients who have adipose tissue (fat) in the abdominal area can have it removed with liposuction. This procedure involves going under the skin in the abdominal area and sucking the fat out.
Many patients prefer a different procedure called SmartLipo. With SmartLipo, laser energy liquefies the fat in the abdominal area and then the fat is removed using a cannula (small tube).
Following liposuction, many patients elect to have a tummy tuck, which is the removal and tightening of excess skin. The muscle is often times tightened, especially for moms post-pregnancy. The plastic surgeon will usually make a horizontal crescent-shaped incision above the pubic hairline.
Some people with a large amount of skin to remove and stretch will need a second circular incision around the naval to reposition it in the remaining skin.
Once the incisions are made, the skin is pulled down, the excess skin is cut off, and the skin is stitched in place. This usually gives patients a flat stomach allowing the abdominal muscles underneath to show through.
The Importance of Continued Work Following Plastic Surgery
While it may be rewarding to see your abs following SmartLipo and a tummy tuck, that doesn’t mean you should stop working on your abdominal muscles. When you stop working those muscles, they will shrink and you won’t be able to see them. Fat can start to accumulate in that area again. Continuing a healthy lifestyle of eating well and exercising regularly will help you keep the flat stomach that you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
