You might think that breast augmentation or another obvious procedure is currently the most in demand plastic surgery procedure. However, according to recent findings, from 2015 to 2016, the number of labiaplasty procedures rose by a whopping 45 percent. In addition, this trend is being observed in women all over the world.
Many people are concerned about the idea of this extremely fast-growing cosmetic alteration because of the comparisons that have been made to genital mutilation, which is a human rights violation. However, Dr. Lina Triana, a plastic surgeon working in Colombia, told the Independent, “Nothing could be further from the truth.”
“Most female patients request the procedure to help minimize pain” associated with extra skin in the area or to “improve the aesthetic appearance of their genital area.” Dr. Triana explains that the surgery is empowering for women who can make a change to their own appearance on their terms.
However, other doctors have shown hesitation about performing the surgery, especially because some girls as young as nine years old are seeking the surgery simply because they do not like the appearance of their external genitalia.
As reported by the Independent, over 200 girls under 18 received the surgery on the National Health System between 2015 and 2016, and over 150 of those were under the age of 15.
Is It a Beneficial Option?
For patients who are hoping to change a painful or uncomfortable ongoing issue like pinching or chafing, labiaplasty could be a helpful option. Some women also choose it for aesthetic purposes, which is fine too.
But the most important thing to remember is that any form of physical enhancement should always be approached with an understanding of what it can achieve and with a love for one’s body and oneself.
