Preventing Weight Gain After Lipo:
Patients who come to my laser lipo NYC practices do, in general, take care of their bodies both before and after liposuction. They tend to be people who exercise and eat right.
However, with the winter holidays upon us, a few of them have asked us what might happen if they did gain weight following liposuction.
It is a great question because once a patient undergoes the expense and healing process of liposuction, they want the results to last as long as possible. We offer patients some helpful guidelines for diet and exercise post operatively.
Additionally, we use local anesthesia and IV sedation to reduce the health risks and high costs associated with procedures that use general anesthesia in a hospital setting.
The Skinny on Liposuction and Laser Lipo
Fat cells that are removed during the liposuction procedure do not grow back since as a general rule, the body does not produce new fat cells. If the patient later gains weight, the fat tends to be deposited and distributed proportionally over the entire body, thus all fat cells in the entire body expand equally.
Since there are just enough fat cells left behind in the area which has previously undergone liposuction, the change (expansion of fat cells) will be less noticeable as compared to areas which have not undergone any liposuction and which have 100% of the fat cells present (these areas will enlarge more and will seem as if the fat has gone to only those areas).
If the patient gains excessive amounts of weight (over 15-20 pounds), the areas which have not been liposuctioned (i.e., areas with 100% fat cells) may enlarge to the point that they may look funny and may then need to be liposuctioned. The best thing that post-liposuction patients can do after treatment by our Long Island liposuction and NYC specialists is to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The single best tip I can offer you: Don’t gain weight after lipo!
