Taking time to find a good plastic surgeon is important. Cosmetic surgery is surgery nonetheless, so you need someone who has experience in the procedure you’re seeking.

One of the best ways to know if a plastic surgeon has the education, training, and experience to perform plastic surgery well is to check for board certification.

Plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery graduated from an accredited medical school. They have also completed at least five years of training. This training was part of a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education.

During the training, plastic surgeons gain experience in all types of surgery and two years, specifically, in plastic surgery experience. Certification is not required. It is voluntary. To receive the certification, plastic surgeons must pass written and oral exams.

Re-certification for Plastic Surgeons

Board certified plastic surgeons must fulfill criteria each year to keep their certification. They must submit reviews of hospital privileges, licenses, proof of medical education and peer reviews. After 10 years, plastic surgeons must pass another written examination.

The Importance of Board Certification

Plastic surgeons do not need to become board certified. They do it because they care about their patients. They want them to know they have sought the education and experience needed to keep their patients safe. When you see a board certified plastic surgeon, you know that the American Board of Plastic Surgery has given them their stamp of approval, so you can breathe a sigh of relief.
