Waist training is all the rage right now. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kim Zolciak, Jessica Alba, and many others are rumored to have tried it, and they swear it’s helped whittle their waist. Does it really decrease the circumference of the waist and is it a long-term result?

No.

Waist training isn’t something new. Women for centuries have been doing it with corsets. Corsets wrap around the waist and they are cinched with string tied tightly in the back. Women used it to achieve an hourglass figure.

Nowadays, the waist training comes with soft material that holds tightly around the waist with Velcro. Women place it around them and cinch it as tightly as they can. They leave it around their waist for hours a day in hopes their waist will learn to stay the way it is while wrapped.

The problem is that the waist will stay that way after taking off the waist trainer, but not for long. The body will return to its original state eventually. How long it takes depends on the individual.

What Can Lead to a Smaller Waist?

Diet and exercise can help many people trim their waist area, but not everyone. Some people have trouble zones, which make it hard to lose fat in specific areas (usually due to genetics), so the only way to spot-reduce the fat is through liposuction.

However, liposuction doesn’t always lead to a much smaller waist. The waist can grow in width over time, especially after childbirth. This is usually caused by a separation of the vertical muscles in the abdomen. The only way to permanently re-join abdominal muscles is with a tummy tuck.

With this procedure, a plastic or cosmetic surgeon will bring muscles back together. This tightens the abdomen, which then gives the person a smaller waist. You can think of it as an internal corset.

Many patients are satisfied with the tummy tuck procedure because as long as they maintain their healthy lifestyle, they can keep the narrow mid-section they achieved with the surgery. This is something a waist trainer cannot accomplish.
