If someone asked you, “What is the fastest growing plastic surgery procedure on the market right now?”, what would you say?
You might smugly retort, “Oh, obviously breast implants… I mean, just watch any popular reality show or sitcom… everyone wants to look like them!”
You might say, “Hmm… probably liposuction. Tummy tuck? Okay, then it’s gotta be nose jobs.”
Upper Arm Lifts on the Rise
According to a report released Monday by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which found upper-arm lifts have jumped a staggering 4,378% in the past decade.
Upper-arm lifts, known as brachioplasty, involve trimming and tightening up the loose skin around the underarm area. This procedure is the cure for the infamous “batwing” phenomenon.
This procedure is almost exclusively being sought by individuals who have achieved an intense weight loss and want to get rid of the loose, saggy skin that is left behind. In conjunction with brachioplasty, lower body lifts that trim and tighten excess skin on the buttocks and thighs are also extremely popular.
It seems that tight, sexy upper arms have replaced six-packs as the ultimate body in the Hollywood world of celebrity idolization. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Kelly Ripa, and even Michelle Obama have gotten attention and praise for their uncompromisingly stunning ability to rock those sleeveless tops.
Debunking the Rumors
News articles with headlines like, “Baring arms! Gals opt for surgery to look like Michelle“, are somehow crediting the First Lady for this increase in brachioplasty procedures but Alan Matarasso, a Manhattan plastic surgeon and spokesman for ASPS, says that may not be entirely true. “There was always buzz about (Obama’s arms) and the ASPS did a little survey and they found that people admired Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Obama’s arms.”
The doctor suggested that the real reason for the spike in procedures could be that there are an increasing number of people who are achieving great amounts of weight loss and deciding to go in for a nip and a tuck to tighten up. Matarasso also suggests that modern fashion trends could also be to blame. “Women 10 years ago didn’t walk around with shirts with their bra straps hanging out. When I was growing up, only the class bad girl did that,” Matarasso said. “Now, it’s like a fashion statement.”
