People generally seek rhinoplasty for the following reasons:

  1. To change the size or shape of their nose
  2. To refine the nose
  3. To correct any problems that occurred during a previous rhinoplasty

With these reasons, patients usually require one of three types of rhinoplasty procedures.

Reduction Rhinoplasty

A reduction rhinoplasty can change the size and shape of your nose. Plastic surgeons refer to this procedure as either a reduction rhinoplasty or augmentation rhinoplasty, with the reduction being for patients wanting a smaller nose and the augmentation being patients who want a bigger or different shape.

With this procedure, plastic surgeons can change the appearance of the nose by removing a hump on the bridge of the nose or reduce a large nasal tip. Cartilage or bone can also be removed to change the appearance of the nose.

Refinement Rhinoplasty

This procedure refines the tip of the nose or can alter the size or width of the nostrils. This type of rhinoplasty can also make aspects of the nose appear smaller by reducing a hump on the bridge, rotating the tip, or adjusting the angle of the nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty

This procedure is performed if you are not satisfied with a previous rhinoplasty surgery.  In some cases, patients do not receive the size, angle, or width that they had requested from their prior surgeon. In those cases, they can have revision rhinoplasty to give it the desired appearance.

Sometimes, after patients have a hump reduced, they realize they also want to change other aspects of their nose’s appearance, so they elect to go back for revision rhinoplasty. The reasons for an additional rhinoplasty procedure are many, and it’s a personal decision for the person who decides to seek it.
