Self-esteem has no boundaries. While you’re supposed to feel your most comfortable with someone you love, that doesn’t always happen. Many people feel even more anxious about the way they look in front of their spouse, especially men with gynecomastia.
Recently, I had a patient come in who said, “My wife has never seen my chest.” The torment this young man (let’s call him Jake) has been through made my heart sink. Jake has been married for many years and has two children, but he has never allowed his wife to see him without a shirt.
Those of you who have gynecomastia can probably relate…
Jake tried to lose weight and build up his pectoral muscles. It didn’t do any good. The muscle growth pushed his breast tissue out making his enlarged mammary glands even more noticeable.
After reviewing Jake’s medical history and doing a thorough examination on him, we discussed male breast reduction. This procedure would not only remove his glandular tissue and fat, but also tighten his chest to show off his defined pectoral muscles. Without much hesitation, Jake agreed to do the procedure.
About the Surgery
The way I perform this procedure is gentle and effective. I use local anesthetic to numb the areas to be treated along with IV sedation (not general anesthesia). This helps patients recover much easier and faster post-operatively.
Then, I use laser liposuction to remove excess fat from the breasts. This technology melts fat and tightens the skin simultaneously. I pride myself in being one of the few cosmetic surgeons to use the laser for fat while also removing the entire gland, which produces the best aesthetic results.
It almost brought a tear to my eye when Jake told me about his relief and gratitude over the results. He is now proud of his chest, and no longer needs to hide behind his shirt.
I love my work. To be able to fulfill people’s cosmetic desires is what makes me wake up with a smile on my face every morning.
