The Confidence Files #2: When People Have What They Desire Without Even Knowing It

My name is Dr. A. Abraham Levin, MD, and I am a cosmetic surgeon as well as the Medical & Surgical Director at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York. I’ll be providing our readers with weekly stories from the consultation room in our patient docu-series, “The Confidence Files.”

“Tears from the Sky” is a Sting song that has meant a lot to me over the years in plastic surgery. There’s a line in it that says, “How fragile we are…” This line always comes to mind as I meet with patients who desire what they don’t know they already have.

There’s another song by U2 – “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” This song has a line that says, “Wipe your tears away.” This too is a line I often reflect on, especially when I see so many people with insecurities regarding their appearance. What people tell themselves undermines their confidence and self-esteem, and that saddens me.

The following are two stories of patients who I think about from time to time because they have what they desire, and they don’t even know it.

Jeff came in for a consultation to improve the look of his chest with a gynecomastia procedure. What’s disheartening is that he has terrific pectoral muscle development, and doesn’t have any mammary gland enlargement and no discernible pathology.

For this reason, I had to turn Jeff away. In my professional opinion, a gynecomastia procedure was unnecessary. While he may not have agreed because of his misconceived notions about his body, it’s my mission to protect all of my patients from making a wrong decision.

Sandy

Sandy is in her early twenties. She has never had children. She’s quite slim with a tiny abdomen. She requested a tummy tuck procedure because she believed her abdomen was too prominent.

Instead of appeasing her request, I suggested that we try Smartlipo™, which is much less invasive and could achieve the minor adjustments she was seeking. After the procedure, she was thrilled with her results.

No one can wipe all our tears away. Doing surgery is one of the most fulfilling things that I do. My empathy and compassion for others empower me to guide my patients in a way that can protect them, but yet, bring them satisfaction.
