Plastic surgery is a complex set of procedures. It is sometimes as intensive as a medically required surgery. Most people don’t understand that, so they don’t believe they need to ask as many questions. This is completely untrue.

Prospective plastic surgery patients should ask many questions before undergoing plastic surgery, and these are some of the most important ones.

Are you a Board Certified plastic surgeon?

The American Board of Plastic Surgery has high standards for certification. These high standards ensure plastic surgeons have the experience, knowledge, and skill to perform plastic surgery well. To receive certification, plastic surgeons must undergo specialized training and have many years of experience in the field.

How long have you been a plastic surgeon?

It’s true that everyone has to start somewhere, but if you’re paying a lot of money for plastic surgery, you want someone with experience. Usually, a plastic surgeon achieves expertise after about five years of practicing.

How many procedures of this type have you performed?

Just because a plastic surgeon has been practicing for five years, it doesn’t mean that he has performed certain procedures many times. Following the question about how long the person has been a plastic surgeon, you should ask how many times he has performed the procedure you want.

You may think this is a rude question or the plastic surgeon will be embarrassed, but don’t worry; plastic surgeons will not take offense to this question. Those that do usually are defensive because they don’t have the level of experience they feel they need to gain your business. If that’s the case, look elsewhere.

Who else will assist during the procedure?

A surgeon is rarely by himself. He should have a nurse to hand him instruments and usually there will be an anesthesiologist available (if general anesthesia is used). If the procedure is performed at a teaching hospital, there may also be medical students or interns in the room. You do have the right to refuse their presence, which is why this is a great question to ask.

What are the risks?

While you may not want to be scared by hearing about the risks, it’s important you know. This way you will know what to expect after surgery, and if there is a problem, you will be able to seek treatment as soon as possible. This can minimize the trauma you’ll experience if there is a post-surgery problem.

Do you have some patients I can contact for references?

Plastic surgeons often keep a list of patients who are willing to provide a testimonial or reference. By asking for the contact information of three people, you will be able to hear exactly what they think of the plastic surgeon you’re considering for your procedure.

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York offers highly-qualified plastic and cosmetic surgeons. They have many years of experience and have performed gynecomastia surgery, SmartLipo, breast augmentation, fat transfer, and rhinoplasty many times.
