Has your face taken on a rounded shape and appears swollen? If so, you may have a condition called Moon Facies.
Moon Facies happens when excess fat builds up on the sides of the face. Most of the time, it’s caused by obesity. Moon Facies is not usually a serious medical condition. It’s simply the build up a fat in the face.
Other Conditions That Cause Moon Facies
There are some cases in which the symptoms of a swollen, rounded face are due to Cushing’s syndrome. Abnormally high levels of cortisol cause Cushing’s Syndrome. Cortisol is a hormone that is released during periods of stress.
Cushing’s Syndrome can result in physical signs of the disease such as Moon Facies or a “buffalo hump”, which is a fatty deposit on the back of the neck and upper back.
Another term for a high release of cortisol is hyperadrenocorticalism or hypercortisolism. The increase in cortisol release is related to an adrenal gland problem. The adrenal glands are located on the top of the kidneys, and they are what release the cortisol.
When adrenal glands do this, it’s usually because there’s a problem with the pituitary gland. When the pituitary gland releases too much ACTH, it signals the adrenal glands to increase cortisol release.
Tumors in the lungs, pancreas, or thymus can also lead to increased release of ACTH and cortisol. Tumors on the adrenal glands can cause the same effect. Taking steroid medications such as prednisone for a long time can also affect the release of these hormones in the body too.
Your First Step: See a Medical Professional
The only way to know if the swelling in your face is due to a health condition is to have your physician do an exam and perform blood and urine tests can identify elevated levels of cortisol. A MRI or CT scan can be used to determine if a tumor is present.
If the doctor finds that there is no medical condition contributing to your round, swollen face. It may be due to excess body fat. If this is the case, diet and exercise may be able to reduce the fat in the face, which will take away some of that rounded appearance.
