How to Support Your Loved One

You have many options when it comes to supporting your loved one. You can do all of these or just some of them.

Listen

When someone is about to undergo surgery, he or she usually wants to talk about the procedure and any feelings associated with it. This person can be excited and scared. Don’t say or think the person is making a bad decision if he or she is happy one minute and unsure the next. This is common, and it just means the person needs to be listened to and supported.

Offer a Ride

A patient needs a ride to the surgical center and back. If you are able to do this, it would be a major help. Not only will your loved one feel good having you there, but it ensures that he or she gets home safely.

Encourage Your Loved One

The last thing someone wants to hear after getting plastic surgery is one of the following:

  • It doesn’t look any different.
  • Oh wow! Are you okay?
  • Is it going to stay like that?

Be positive after your loved one comes out of surgery. Yes, the swelling and bruising will go away with time. For some procedures, it can take up to 12 months before the final results are achieved (such as with rhinoplasty).

Make a Meal

You can show how much you love someone by making his or her favorite meal or treat. Showing up with some food can take off a lot of pressure too, especially if the person is a parent.

Ask if You Can Do Anything

Sometimes, you may not know how to help your loved one. There’s no reason you can’t ask the person what he or she needs. That’s the best way to find out what they really want.
