A recent report in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has shed light on something everyone should be aware of when seeking stem cell cosmetic surgery. Understanding that you may not be getting what you think you are can save you a lot of time and money.

Many plastic surgery advertisements are claiming that facelifts, breast augmentation and vaginal rejuvenation have the benefits of stem cells (which are known for their ability to repair other cells). The problem is that many of the surgeries conducted are not using stem cells.

When stem cell procedures are performed the cells must be sorted, which is quite advanced for many plastic surgeons’ offices. Most of those who say they are performing stem cell cosmetic surgeries are actually using many different cells such as platelets from blood.

The very valid argument presented in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery report states that if it were truly stem cell cosmetic surgery, there would only be high-quality stem cells used.

One of the most commonly advertised stem cell cosmetic surgeries is facelift. Unfortunately, they are not stem cell based (and not approved by the FDA to market them as such). What the procedure really entails is “lipofilling,” which is using fat cells of many types from body fat.

The only type of cosmetic procedure that is stem cell based and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is LAVIV, an autologous cellular product that is injected into the lines around the mouth and nose.

What We Provide in Stem Cell Cosmetic Surgery

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York uses American Cryostem for the processing and cryopreservation of fat tissue and stem cells (for an additional fee). Our highly-qualified plastic and cosmetic surgeons remove fat from the body via liposuction and then send it to the American Cryostem lab.

This special process ensures the fat tissue is rich with stem cells. These specialized cells make it more likely that a fat transfer procedure desired in the future will be more effective and long lasting.

Fat transfer removes fat from one part of your body and places it in another. Many people prefer to have this done for breast augmentation instead of implants. They also seek out this procedure to improve the shape of the buttocks and face.

Patients do not need to have their fat sent to American Cryostem in order to have Brazilian butt lift (fat transfer to the buttocks) or facial fat transfer procedures in our office. We have the equipment in our surgical suites to purify the fat so it is ready to be injected on the same day as liposuction is performed.
