While some teens are receiving cars or vacations as presents for graduating from high school, teenagers in South Korea are getting cosmetic surgery procedures. Many girls who attend the South Korean school of Gumi Girls High School undergo plastic surgery each year.

It isn’t just students at this school that are going under the knife. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that one in five South Korean women have had some type of cosmetic surgery, including adolescents.

The Price of Beauty

One of the main procedures these women undergo is blepharoplasty, also called “double eyelid surgery”, which creates an extra fold of skin above the eye that is visible when the eye is open. According to Jim Kim, a high school junior, most of her peers want to have that type of surgery and plan to do it over their winter break.

Talking to Your Teen

South Korean Teens get Plastic Surgery as Graduation PresentsIt’s not just South Korean teens that want plastic surgery. Teenagers worldwide increasingly want to change their appearance, either making themselves more slender or better endowed. If your teen wants to undergo plastic surgery, there are a few things that you need to be sure to discuss with them first.

Pick a quiet time to sit down and talk with your son or daughter about their desires for cosmetic surgery. Be sure to listen to their motives for wanting the procedure. If they have already made up their mind, it is important for you to make sure they know all of the facts, including the price and possible side effects and risks of surgery.

Have them do their research and learn everything there is to know about the surgery they wish to get. Remind them that surgery is permanent, and the results could change due to their still developing bodies.
