Silicone implants have been a formidable competitor for their saline counterparts since they appeared on the market in the 1960s. Despite a 14 year ban, lifted in 2006, silicone implants have made an astounding comeback.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the percentage of breast augmentation patients receiving silicone implants has jumped from 18% in 2006 to 72% in 2012! So why are silicone implants so popular? Mostly because many people think that silicone has a more natural look and feel than saline.
While saline implants are still appropriate for some patients, silicone breast implants might become even more popular in the near future. The FDA approved a new type of silicone implant in February 2013, the Allergan Natrelle 410. Nicknamed “gummy bear” implants, they address the major concerns about traditional silicone gel implants.
What’s the difference between saline and silicone?
There’s been a lot of buzz and anticipation surrounding gummy bear implants in the last year because they are made of “cohesive gel”, meaning they retain their shape and can’t leak.
Safety concerns due to leakage were the main reason silicone implants were pulled from the market in 1992. The new form of silicone feels just like a gummy bear (hence the name) and makes for a more stable implant.
Which breast implant is more natural?
Though no implant feels just like a real breast, the new implants don’t shift, causing telltale ripples (a problem found more often in saline implants) in the skin. Because the gel won’t shift, it’s easier to mimic the natural shape of the breast, which is especially helpful for reconstruction patients, who have often lost only one breast.
Of course, there are both pros and cons to the new silicone implants. They will be more expensive than traditional implants and may require a larger incision. Only a plastic surgeon can advise on which implant is most appropriate for each patient.
