Sedation Used During Gynecomastia Surgery. Blog By Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY located in Long Island and NYC.

At Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York, our first priority is our patients’ safety. Every decision we make is based on the health of our patients. This includes those who undergo gynecomastia surgery.

We NEVER use general anesthesia with this procedure. General anesthesia is safe for most people, but there are higher risks associated with it. These risks can include:

  • Postoperative confusion
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

These risks increase if the person smokes and/or suffers from seizures, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, or drug allergies. Taking certain medications can also increase these risks.

General anesthesia is expensive. We know the expense of the procedure can be a budget buster for many of our patients, so since we do not NEED to use general anesthesia, we believe it’s an additional benefit that our patients can spend less overall.

We use an IV sedation to help you relax, plus a local anesthetic to numb the areas to be treated. We dispense a combination of pain medications intravenously to help keep you comfortable. Most patients rest or sleep during their procedure.

The purpose of IV sedation is so that you are able to recover quickly after the procedure. Many people can resume everyday activities the day after surgery.

The local anesthetic is to ensure you can’t feel anything during the procedure. With our male breast reduction methods, laser liposuction is used to gently melt excess breast fat and tighten the skin. This allows for less blood loss during surgery and faster recovery afterward.

We are one of the only practices in the area that uses the laser to produce the best possible result. The other aspect that sets us apart is the fact that we usually remove the entire breast gland so that the condition does not return.

We believe IV sedation and a local anesthetic is the best combination for a safe, affordable, and pleasant experience. The anxiety caused by enlarged male breasts has already caused you too much grief; we want to make the process of treating the condition much more positive.
