Breast Enlargement Recovery Advice

Patients who undergo treatment by our breast augmentation surgeons report great satisfaction with their new appearance. Getting to the finish line of breast enlargement surgery, however, is a process.

In fact, our patients may be surprised to know that swelling can occur on and off for up to four months following breast implant surgery.

Immediate Sensations

We tend to associate the biggest obstacles of surgery with immediate recovery. Indeed, in the first few hours after surgery, a patient will still feel the effects of the general anesthesia (if used during the procedure). Immediate symptoms during recovery may include grogginess, chills and nausea.

Patients may want to pack a cozy pair of thick socks to wear following surgery and have a blanket to cover up with during the ride home. To be prepared for nausea, the patient may bring a small trash receptacle or large bowl for the car ride home in case vomiting should occur.

Helping Hands for a Better Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Because it takes time for the effects of general anesthesia to wear off, it is beneficial to have a loved one at home during the first few days after surgery. This person can make sure that the patient is given medications at regular intervals, as waiting until pain occurs to take medications causes undue physical and emotional stress.

This short-term caregiver can help the patient to and from the bathroom, assist with bathing and prepare meals, as well as provide much needed companionship to help avoid post-operative depression.

Dealing with Swelling

Swelling is at its worst in the first 48 hours following the procedure. During these first couple of days, the patient may apply cold compresses to the chest in order to ease discomfort and reduce swelling.

Patients will be advised to wear a compression garment or surgical bra. Doing so helps to control swelling, reduces tissue soreness and supports the implants and tissue in their new position.

Dealing with Discomfort

Soreness will occur after surgery; its severity is dependent upon the placement of implants during treatment by our breast enlargement Long Island & NYC experts. When implants are placed under the muscle rather than over it, recovery time is increased and more soreness will occur. When augmentation is combined with the breast lift procedure, the soreness will be greater due to more tissue and muscle disruption than with an augmentation alone. Any discomfort during the healing process is helped with the consistent wearing of a compression garment, ice packs, and taking the pain medication as prescribed by the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team.

Preparing for instances of soreness, bruising and limited movement are key to a successful and stress-free recovery. These symptoms of healing are common and nothing to worry about so long as you come in for your regularly scheduled follow up visits so that the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team can monitor your healing progress. These appointments are vital so that you can discuss your healing and to ensure that all is going well and you are on the road to optimal results.
