Pre-Surgical Literature

Before treatment is started, patient and doctor must complete a comprehensive consultation in order to discuss desired outcome as well as what will take place during the procedure.

Patients are given a complete packet of information that contains all important factors of rhinoplasty surgery.  This packet is also helpful for friends and family who may be assisting the patient after surgery.

Medications, Supplements, and Habits to Stop Before Surgery

It is important to prepare for surgery as early as possible so that the days leading up to treatment are not wrought with stress and anxiety.  Before a surgical procedure, it will be necessary to stop the use of certain medication and to cease smoking.

Products containing ibuprofen, aspirin, tobacco, nicotine and alcohol, as well as some herbal supplements may have a negative impact on surgery and the recovery process and will likely be included in a list of things to avoid before surgery. Visit our Pre-Op page on this site for more details.

Preparing for Aftercare

While there are lab tests and visits that will take place before surgery, the patient will also do well to get any prescriptions filled in the weeks leading up to his or her treatment so as not to return home without the proper medications.  Shopping for aftercare products several days before rhinoplasty surgery is one of the best ways to prepare for a cozy recovery period at home.

This includes over-the-counter medications, a thermometer, dressings, an ice pack and a heating pad which may help with any sore muscles the patient may get from limited movement.

The most difficult recovery process after rhinoplasty may last a few weeks, so patients should plan to have a little extra help on the line just in case it is needed.  Some of the preparations to make beforehand include cleaning the house or hiring a professional cleaning service.

This includes taking out all trash and washing, folding and putting away all laundry.  When pets or children are in the home, it is important to plan for their needs as well, since the patient will be limited in the amount that he or she can do after surgery.

It helps to have several days’ worth of snacks and meals prepared beforehand, for the patient as well as any children who cannot be watched outside the home.  Foods for the patient should be soft and easily digestible for the first day or two so as not to upset a medicated stomach.

Jell-O, pudding, yogurt and oatmeal are great food items to stock before rhinoplasty surgery. Food items that can be consumed in small bites and are not crunchy are ideal choices (sandwiches and peanut brittle are poor choices for these reasons).

Rhinoplasty surgery does not have to be a stressful event.  By following all pre- and post-surgical instructions and planning early, the patient allows for time to simply relax and heal before unveiling a beautiful new nose.
