Plastic Surgery Without the Scalpel Is Growing in Popularity

Wish you could have an injection into an area of the body that is “rounder” than you’d like and have the fat melt away? This could be coming true very soon for Americans if the FDA approves a new injectable substance as soon as May 2015.

This new substance, ATX-101, is a synthetic (man-made) secondary bile called deoxycholic acid. This acid helps to break down dietary fat in our bodies and is now being tested in direct injection application to the fat layer under the skin.

The results so far have been fat loss and fat reduction in treated areas. Dubbed a “jab” treatment, this injectable will slim down specific areas of the body such as the fat under the chin.

Minimally Invasive Procedures Gaining Ground

Nearly 50 percent of the cosmetic procedures in the US were minimally invasive procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and facial fillers, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery.

They also reported that 2014 was the most lucrative year for plastic surgery procedures since the recession in 2008…to the tune of $5 billion in minimally invasive procedures alone.

These procedures are so popular for several reasons. First, they can feasibly be done in less than an hour. Second, they offer quick results with little to no down time. Finally, the price is much lower versus a surgical procedure done in the operating room.

Though injectables aren’t permanent, a physician spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgery commented that they allow patients to “try it on for awhile.”

Bizarre Treatments at Your Local Plastic Surgeon’s Office

Ever heard of mustache transplants for the hairless that want to look more like a hipster? How about BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers for poker players so they can hide their poker face?

Injectable treatments overall rose to about 9.5 million treatments performed in 2014, or 13 percent of all cosmetic procedures done in the United States, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
