The recent release of the annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics shows that plastic surgery continues to gain popularity in the United States with a 3% rise from 2012-2013.
As the stigma surrounding cosmetic surgery falls away, and the safety and recovery period of procedures improves, it’s not too surprising that the statistics show more interest in aesthetic treatments among Americans. Here are some notable trends from the 2013 statistics.
Brazilian Butt Lift & Fat Transfer
Natural procedures are on the rise, and Brazilian Butt Lift procedures (buttock augmentation using fat) rose 16% in the last year. These treatments offer several benefits, as fat transfer involves gentle liposuction from problem areas to provide grafting material for the buttocks, breast, or face.
Leftover purified stem cells can be banked for future use in health and beauty procedures. These procedures are so popular partly because of the natural results they yield.
Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) saw an 11% jump as more men got comfortable with turning to cosmetic surgery for an issue dubbed “man boobs” by the general public. Gynecomastia is triggered by hormonal imbalances and must be corrected with surgery for permanent resolution.
Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments
As has been the case in previous years, non-invasive treatments remain extremely popular, with Botox, fillers, laser skin treatments, and chemical peels among the most requested.
With BOTOX continually proving its versatility (it was approved in 2013 to treat crows’ feet around the eyes), it continues to be the most popular procedure overall, with over 6.3 million treatments in 2013.
This tried and true wrinkle treatment jumped 3% from 2012-2013, proving its popularity is far from waning. The jump could have to do with younger people, as well as more men, opting for Botox (called “Bro-tox” by some).
Dermal fillers came in as the second most popular non-invasive aesthetic treatment for several reasons. First, more fillers have been introduced recently, including Juvederm Voluma XC, a filler formulated to restore lost volume to the cheeks. Second, fillers are becoming more versatile as well as longer lasting. With their affordable price tag, zero downtime, and instant results, it’s no surprise these treatments are on the rise!
