Every year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases data about the most common plastic surgery procedures from the previous year. This information is helpful in for research purposes and to inform plastic surgeons about how they can keep up with patients’ demands.
We thought you would be interested in the results. It can help you understand the trends in plastic surgery, so you can decide what you may want to pursue.
Cosmetic surgery patients spent $13.3 billion on 15.9 million cosmetic procedures in 2015. This is up 4% from 2014. Some of this increase has to do with more men seeking cosmetic surgery, which was up 2% from 2014. While Caucasians most often get aesthetic surgery, there was a 3% increase in the number of Hispanics and African Americans who received procedures.
The most common types of treatments were minimally invasive, at 14.2 million performed. The next most popular type was reconstructive procedures, at 5.8 million. Finally, there were 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures. All of these numbers increased since 2014.
Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures
Breast augmentation tops the list of the most popular procedures, but that was down 2% since last year. Breast enhancement has been the #1 most performed cosmetic procedure since 2006. In 2015, 80% of implants were silicone, while just 20% were saline.
Liposuction is the second most popular procedure, and increased by 5% last year.
Nose reshaping came in third. The number of procedures in 2015 is similar to the number performed the year before.
Eyelid surgery is the fourth most common procedure, but was down by 1% since last year.
Tummy tuck made the list at #5 with a huge increase of 9% since 2014.
Even though butt augmentation with fat grafting did not make the top 5 list, it did see an incredible jump. In 2015, the number of procedures rose by 28%! Lower body lifts and breast lifts were also more popular with increases of 8% and 7%, respectively.
For minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, BOTOX® made the top of the list. Soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion followed. Microdermabrasion decreased in number of procedures by 9%, while Botox®, soft tissue fillers, and chemical peels all increased.
