Most people would never think about plastic surgery falling into being eco-friendly, but there’s one procedure that can be considered as “green.” That procedure is fat transfer.

According to Dr. Michael Burgdorf, a licensed and board-certified plastic surgeon in Nashville, Tennessee, the green movement doesn’t have to end with recycling glass and plastic bottles. If you want to take it a step further, you can recycle the fat in your body by having it removed from unwanted areas and placed into areas that will make you look younger.

“The typical harvest sites (where we get the fat from) include the abdomen, thighs, hips and lower back,” Dr. Burgdorf writes in his column for the Daily News: “The recipient site (where the fat goes to) include[s] the buttocks, face, breasts and hands.”

In this green type of plastic surgery, fat is removed from the harvest sites with liposuction, and then treated with either a specific type of washing and rinsing process or by being put in a centrifuge machine.

Once the fat is purified and ready to be used, it can be injected into the recipient sites in order to give a plumping effect that will smooth out age lines, plump up the cheeks, under eye hollows, or lips…or to create curves and volume in the backside (Brazilian butt lift) or breasts (natural breast augmentation).

While fat transfers are a serious procedure that must be done by a licensed medical professional, many individuals have them performed in an outpatient center and go home the same day.

Others may spend the night in the hospital if the entire process involves more than one procedure. But generally, transferring fat is considered an effective way of reusing “old” material.

Sides Effects of Fat Transfer

The only side effect seen so far? A certain percentage of the transplanted fat is reabsorbed into the body, but doctors usually inject more into the target areas to help arrive at the right balance after reabsorption occurs. Patients can also opt to have an additional procedure in the future or to bank their fat for later using a cryogenic (freezing) process.

It’s “…like the opposite of a haircut,” Dr. Burgdorf writes, “I can always put more fat in if desired. The good news is that most of us can provide more of this renewable resource if needed.”
