The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently announced the number of procedures performed in 2014.
The most popular procedures across the country were Brazilian butt lift and labiaplasty, trends we are also seeing at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY.
For those that don’t know what these procedures are, Brazilian lift uses fat transfer to enhance the shape and size of the buttocks. Labiaplasty reshapes the labia, or external genitals, to give women the shape they want to achieve.
What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Fat transfer buttocks augmentation, or Brazilian butt lift (affectionately referred to as a BBL by patients), is where fat is removed via liposuction from areas where fat is plentiful. These areas can include the abdomen, hips, thighs, and back. The fat is then purified and process to be injected into the buttocks to enhance its shape and add volume.
The president of ASPS, Dr. Scott Glasberg, stated in a recent interview with NBC News that celebrities and the media are responsible for this surge in Brazilian lift procedures. Dr. Michael Edwards, president of ASAPS surmised that the increase was due to social media.
The ASPS revealed that fat transfer to the buttocks rose by 15% last year. More than 11,000 procedures were performed in the United States. On the other hand, the ASAPS organization found that their surgeons reported double the procedures in 2014 versus the year before; a total of 11,527 procedures were reported for this survey.
One surgeon in Miami who was interviewed for NBC stated that his BBL procedures have gone from 10% of his overall procedures to 95%.
What is Labiaplasty
In labiaplasty, women can reshape their labia, or the inner flaps of tissue surrounding the vaginal opening. Some reasons why labiaplasty is requested can include:
- Tissue is stretched out from childbirth.
- The size of each labia differ (one larger than another).
- The length of the labia are too long.
- The size and/or length of the labia are causing discomfort while sitting.
- The size and/or length of the labia are causing painful intercourse.
The American Society of Plastic Surgery reported that in 2014, labiaplasty procedures increased by 49% between 2013 and 2014. It is important to note that choosing an experienced surgeon with a proven track record of safe results is crucial when deciding on whom to entrust your procedure to.
Complications with labiaplasty are generally low if patients choose a Board Certified plastic surgeon in an accredited surgical facility, both of which are available at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York.
