We see patients every day who are looking for a way to get rid of stubborn fat in areas that have not responded to diet and exercise.

But many of them have a valid concern: what about skin sagging after liposuction? Here’s what you need to know about how laser lipo is different.

Benefits of Laser Lipolysis Technology

In a laser-assisted liposuction procedure, the heat from the laser fiber helps to not only melt away fat in a smooth manner, but provides much less trauma to the surrounding tissues in the treated area.

An added benefit of the laser’s heat is that it causes the collagen in the deep layers of the skin to contract, allowing for the skin to “bounce back” more quickly after losing volume after fat removal.

In a study released in 2013, 2,200 male and female patients underwent laser lipo, specifically looking at their skin’s ability to retract after losing inches.

It was found that the study subjects’ skin had retracted to within 20% to 80% of what it should have based on the volume of fat loss in inches that were removed.

Also significant is that the researchers estimated that the laser helped skin tightening after liposuction with a 50% boost in skin retraction versus non-laser liposuction.

The study’s head researcher, Dr. Abbas Chamsuddin, acknowledged that he needed to conduct a second study on the same number of patients; only the next group would receive traditional liposuction (without laser). We have yet to see those study results.
