Data on the number of gender confirmation surgeries being performed in the United States is finally coming to light, and for the first time, we are able to see the trend in these surgeries from one year to another.
As reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of these procedures has increased 20 percent between 2015 and 2016.
According to Business Insider, this “first ever report” found that over 3,200 surgeries were performed in 2016 in the U.S. These can include facial contouring, body contouring, and/or gender reassignment surgeries, and Loren Schechter, MD, explains why:
“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to gender confirmation,” says the board certified plastic surgeon. “There’s a wide spectrum of surgeries that someone may choose to treat gender dysphoria.”
Because there were so few surgical options for transgender individuals as recently as several years ago, we are only now able to see the impact that these options have made on the lives of patients and on their ability to reflect on the outside who they are on the inside.
According to Gearah Goldstein, a transgender patient who worked with Dr. Schechter, “For transgender people, like myself, surgical options are a corrective treatment, not cosmetic…It has been a lifelong journey for me. Growing up, there wasn’t even a word for transgender…The reality I lived through has allowed me to assure the next generation that there is nothing abnormal about what they’re feeling.”
In addition, we have also come to understand that surgery alone isn’t enough to for transgender individuals to feel comfortable in their own skin. Surgeons like Dr. Schechter must undergo training in order to be sensitive to the needs of their patients, and to be a part of the team of specialists that work effectively with the individual.
