Exercise After Abdominal Liposuction is Vital to Your Health by James Christian, RPA-C | Laser Lipo NYC & Long Island

Many women believe that liposuction will leave them with sagging skin in the abdominal area. They think that the only way to prevent that from happening is to have liposuction and a tummy tuck.

The good news is that this is not always the case, especially when women elect to have laser liposuction, or Smart Lipo.

With traditional liposuction, fat is removed with a surgical procedure than manually breaks up the fat under the skin with manual back-and-forth motion.

Most plastic surgeons will only recommend this procedure to those who have good skin elasticity already because removing fat means that the skin will have to shrink to its new size. Thus, if the person doesn’t already have tight skin, it may sag. The belief that a tummy tuck may be ideal for women who have loose skin is absolutely true.

Smart Lipo Skin Tightening Effects

However, with Smart Lipo, the removal of fat is done differently and the procedure helps tighten the skin. In a study, 2,200 women and men received laser liposuction in their belly, thighs, and arms. Three months after the procedure, the study participants experienced between 20 to 80 percent skin tightening. This is much more than what patients who receive traditional liposuction experience.

With Smart Lipo, the laser is used to liquefy the adipose tissue. The liquefied fat is then removed with a small tube called a cannula. The small amount of remaining liquefied fat does not need to be removed because the body will naturally eliminate it from the body.

This means that even though patients will see a difference following the procedure, they will continue to see changes in the treated areas. Our patients and surgeons prefer this method of liposuction because it’s less invasive, has minimal to no scarring, and the recovery time is much shorter versus traditional liposuction.

When Liposuction Is Preferred

While Smart Lipo is more desirable to most people, there are cases in which liposuction is better. Smart Lipo cannot remove as much fat as traditional liposuction can, so most people will not see significant weight loss with the procedure.

Women who would like to rid their body of a high volume of fat may find that liposuction is much more effective. While this may lead to skin sagging, the desire to remove a large amount of fat is seen as a greater benefit to some patients. As a general rule, we do not perform high volume liposuction on patients.

An option for people who do not want to have a tummy tuck and liposuction is to have Smart Lipo followed by traditional liposuction. Some studies have shown that this has improved skin tightening by 57%.
