More women than ever are seeking the option of nipple reduction surgery. While this procedure has been found to be relatively quick and offers the benefit of little downtime, many are wondering why it has become such a popular option today.
The Increase in Nipple Reduction Surgeries
According to Allure, plastic surgeon Matthew Schulman, M.D. has seen “a 25 percent increase for this procedure since last year in his practice alone.” Another surgeon, Darren Smith, M.D., stated he receives this request often and that the amount of people asking for the surgery is growing. But why is this change happening?
The Desire for Smaller Nipples
According to Dr. Schulman, there has always been an aesthetic desire for smaller areolas. A recent survey conducted by the Plastic Surgery Group found that more people preferred smaller nipples and areolas to larger ones:
- 92 percent of the participants deemed nipples that covered 50 percent of the breast as “too big.”
- 78 percent said those that covered 15 percent of the breast were “too small.”
- Participants stated that nipples which covered 25 to 30 percent of the breasts were “just right.”
The trend seems to be that breasts with smaller areolas and nipples are considered to be more youthful. It is common for these areas to become stretched out with age and/or after having children. But the advanced surgical options now available with breast augmentation and other such procedures have significantly increased the ability for patients to now create the exact look they want.
“There has always been a desire for smaller areolas,” Schulman told Allure, “but I think more people are realizing that there is an option for them.”
