Internal SPANX® Plastic Surgery May Be on the Horizon. Blog By Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY located in Long Island and NYC.

SPANX® are a women’s best friend. Putting them on and taking them off isn’t as friendly, but it does offer the cinch and lift that most ladies desire. Since Spanx can be a bit cumbersome to deal with, especially that they can’t give women the results they want when undressed, there may be something new on the horizon – “Internal Spanx.”

Internal Spanx is a plastic surgery procedure that promises to lift and shape the butt. The procedure includes decreasing the appearance of cellulite.

According to plastic surgeon Dr. Sheila Nazarian, “The surgery entails sewing strips of polytetrafluoroethylene, a permanent mesh that has been used in hernia surgery, into the buttocks.” While having mesh inside of your buttock may seem a little odd, it’s just like it being in someone’s stomach to repair a hernia. That’s how the developer of this plastic surgery, Dr. Ricardo Ribeiro, came up with it.

What’s even better about this “internal Spanx” is that it doesn’t require a large incision like buttock implants usually do, and it doesn’t require liposuction.

“This new technique addresses the concerns of women who not have extra fat or who do not want any incision. The polytetrafluoroethylene is crisscrossed and attached at the bony part of the buttocks, and works almost like an internal support girdle – much like shapewear except it’s internal.”

Is It Safe?

It’s unknown how safe it is, but most plastic surgeons performing this surgery in Spain and Portugal believe it doesn’t carry any more risk than other procedures. The risk factor seems to be similar to that of hernia surgery, as the mesh can lead to infection or internal bleeding in that procedure as well. Post-op appointments and following recovery instructions from the plastic surgeon is the best way to decrease any complications.

Will It Come to America?

It’s too soon to know if this procedure will make landfall in the United States. The FDA would have to approve the mesh for use in the buttocks for plastic surgery reasons. If it is not approved, the mesh would be used off-label, and many problems could ensue. Keep an eye out for this new procedure.
