Improving your self-esteem

We all go through times of insecurities at one point or another, but low-self esteem can cause some people to experience anxiety, depression, and a host of other problems.

Low self-esteem can originate from several sources, most of which are unfounded and come from within. While it’s not always possible to prevent yourself from feeling bad about the person you are or your appearance, we’ve put together a list of things you can do to feel better when insecurity strikes.

The best part? We couldn’t talk about all of them in one week, so you’ll see more tips in the next post.

1. Analyze Your Insecurities

If you’re not sure why you’re experiencing low self-esteem, it’s very important to examine the reasons behind the issue. Is there a specific mistake or failing you’re ashamed of? Are you having a run of misfortune? Are you simply feeling low for no specific reason? Identifying your problems is the only way to start dealing with them effectively. If you are unable to do this on your own, seek the help of a therapist.

2. Don’t Compare

It’s pointless to compare yourself to others, and it will only feed feelings of jealousy and inadequacy if you’re already experiencing low self-esteem. Remind yourself of the things you’re good at, and realize that people have different strengths, weaknesses and personalities–which doesn’t make them better or worse than you.

3. Take Care of Yourself

It may be a small gesture, but wearing your favorite outfit, spritzing on some uplifting perfume, and doing your hair in a new way can help you feel more confident about yourself. Exercising and cooking healthy foods are also great, positive ways to feel better and bring about a sense of calm.

4. Use it as Motivation

Your self-esteem problems may seem paralyzing, but if you can channel the negative energy into something positive (such as learning a new skill, working out, or knocking items off of your to-do list), the benefit will be two-fold: you’ll accomplish something and you’ll feel better about yourself!
