herbsDespite their many natural benefits, certain herbal supplements can interfere with recovery from cosmetic surgery. Difficulties caused by herbal supplements can range from increased bleeding to unwanted anesthesia interactions.

We ask all of our patients in detail about any drugs they are currently taking or took for the past one month including over-the-counter medications and any supplements (from herbal to vitamins/nutritional). We do recommend one multivitamin daily several weeks prior to a procedure, however.

By telling your plastic surgeon what you take, he or she can tell you what to avoid prior to surgery, and ultimately decrease the risks for potentially dangerous side effects.

Supplements that can cause bleeding problems:

  • Gingko Biloba
  • Garlic
  • Ginseng
  • Fish Oils (omega-3 fatty acids)
  • Dong Quai
  • Feverfew

Supplements that can have negative effects on anesthesia:

  • Valerian
  • St John’s Wort
  • Kava

Supplements known to cause other adverse events:

  • St John’s Wort (can cause photosensitivity, especially after laser or chemical peels)
  • Ginseng (can cause hypoglycemia)

Before having any procedure, meet with us to discuss all of the supplements you are currently taking. Our expert Long Island & NYC cosmetic and plastic surgeons can help guide you toward the safest procedure possible.
