Effects of Alcohol on the Body

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol for many years can damage the body in several different ways. It can lead to problems with the heart, pancreas, and liver, just to name a few. When these organs are damaged, the body releases hormones to compensate for their ineffectiveness.

This causes the body to produce less testosterone and more estrogen. When a man has an overabundance of estrogen in the body, he can grow enlarged male breasts, which is called gynecomastia.

Alcohol abuse is a serious concern. It can lead to many medical, mental, and emotional problems. The good news is the body can usually return to normal after stopping alcohol consumption. The organs damaged by the alcohol can usually repair themselves, unless the person suffers from cirrhosis of the liver.

Treating Gynecomastia

The only way to treat gynecomastia is with surgery. Gynecomastia surgery reduces the size of the breasts in two ways: It reduces the amount of fatty tissue and removes excess breast gland tissue.

When these are reduced, the chest becomes smaller, tighter and flatter. This can be a major relief to men who thought their enlarged breasts would be a reminder of their alcoholism for the rest of their life.

It’s important to know you must decrease or stop alcohol consumption for lasting results. If you continue or increase your alcohol intake, the gynecomastia will return.
