Gynecomastia correction surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue in a man’s breasts. This extra breast tissue is what causes men to develop female looking breasts. The growth is often due to a variety of reasons including hormone imbalance, medications, obesity, and more. A very common question we hear is whether the results of gynecomastia correction surgery are long lasting. In other words, will the gynecomastia return? The answer is that it depends on the cause of the condition. Medication Causes If gynecomastia is caused by a medication, the condition will return after surgery if the medication is continued. It’s important to discuss the side effects of the medication causing gynecomastia with your physician. Then, he or she can identify an alternative to address the health issue being treated while also avoiding the side effect of excess breast growth. It is crucial to try the alternative medication for several months (or as directed by your physician) before having male breast reduction surgery. This will allow you and your doctor to determine if the new drug works as well as the original medication did. Going back to the original medication because the alternative wasn’t effective will likely lead to the gynecomastia returning. Blog By Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY located in Long Island and NYC.

Hormonal Causes

If gynecomastia is due to a hormone imbalance, the results of surgery may last indefinitely if the condition was caused by puberty. Many young men develop gynecomastia during puberty because of the fluctuations in their hormones.

However, if the cause is due to a chronic hormonal issue (too much estrogen), that must be controlled prior to surgery. Usually, hormone therapy can help balance out the hormones to reduce the chances of gynecomastia coming back. Again, you will need to first see your physician for a physical examination and blood work before considering surgery as a resolution.

Obesity

Losing weight can help some men treat their gynecomastia without surgery. However, if after losing the weight, the breasts have not shrunk, surgery can fix that. The concern is if the weight returns, so will the male breasts. It’s important to make lasting lifestyle changes before having surgery to decrease the chances the weight will return afterward.

Male breast reduction surgery does not affect the cause of the condition. It simply removes the results. For this reason, it’s important to treat the cause(s) before dealing with the results of it. That will help you have long-lasting results.
