With more than two in three adult Americans either overweight or obese1, weight loss surgery is becoming more commonplace. Once massive amounts of weight are lost, however, new issues arise.

These issues can include chafing or infections due to loose skin, limitation of physical activity, and patient dissatisfaction with appearance.

This is where a plastic surgeon can help.

Measurable Growth of Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss Surgery

On June 1, 2015 the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) sent out their annual report documenting cosmetic surgery statistics. They found that in 2014, there was a marked increase in weight loss surgery related aesthetic procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and skin lift surgery of the arms, thighs, and breasts2.

In 2013, about 179K patients in the U.S. had weight loss surgery3. Many plastic surgeons surmise that the increase in the aforementioned cosmetic procedures is a direct result of these patients’ dramatic weight loss.

In fact, the statistics in the ASPS annual report show that approximately 25% of the weight loss surgery patients from 2013 came in for cosmetic surgery the following year2.

The growth they observed was as follows:

  • 7% increase in lower body lift procedures2
  • 5% increase in abdominoplasty and thigh lift surgery2
  • 3% increase in upper arm lift surgery2

Should Plastic Surgeons Get Involved From Day One?

Do you think it would be a good idea for a local plastic surgeon to be involved in a patient’s progress starting on the day they decide to have weight loss surgery? The ASPS’s president agrees with this approach.

With the plastic surgeon actively involved in the entire process, better decisions can be made with the patient about timing of skin tightening surgery, muscle repair in the abdomen, and reducing the odds of developing skin infections due to hanging skin.
