In the April 2015 Oxford Aesthetic Surgical Journal, a study was published documenting the results of twenty-six men with gynecomastia who underwent one of several different types of corrective surgical procedures, all with fat injections.
The results were quite encouraging.
Masculine Appearance After Gynecomastia Surgery Study
The study involved twenty-six men with a mean Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25.2, which indicates that none of the subjects were obese. All patients received fat injections into the pectoralis muscles, while some received differing treatment surgeries to correct gynecomastia.
Severity – All study participants were first measured on a Simon scale of severity for their gynecomastia. Nineteen of the twenty-six presented with grade 2a, five had grade 2b, and two measured at grade 1 gynecomastia.
Treatment Included –
- Breast Glands: In twenty-one subjects, the surgeon removed breast gland tissue using a half-moon shaped incision on one side of the nipples. Five of the study subjects received a full circle Benelli-type incision (around the nipple) to remove glandular tissue.
- Breast “Cup”: To remove fat from the breasts, ten patients had liposuction and sixteen had direct excision removal by the surgeon.
- Fat Injection: All patients received a mean volume of 160 mL of liquid fat injected into specific areas (zones) of the chest muscle to promote a more masculine appearance.
Study Results After Male Breast Reduction + Fat Injections
All patients experienced no loss of nipple or breast sensation by the time of final post-operative follow-up, there were no complaints of scarring, and in surveys given to the study subjects their satisfaction with their procedure was rated at 8.4 out of 10.
Quoted by Abigail Sutton: “The researchers concluded that their method, which involves visualization of the pectoralis major, is safer than injection guided by ultrasound without the direct observation of the pectoralis major.”
