A rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure done in our rhinoplasty New York (Long Island) and rhinoplasty NYC (Manhattan) surgical centers for correcting, defining, or reshaping the appearance of the nose. This procedure can help with skin, cartilage or bone issues within the structure of the nose to give the patient a better appearance or to enhance the functionality of the nose itself. Sometimes a rhinoplasty is done at the same time as a facial implant in the chin to help balance out a patient’s profile and features.
Our rhinoplasty NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Theodore Diktaban, comments, "Sadly, for many of the patients we see in our rhinoplasty New York surgery centers, their nose has been something they have disliked for many years; perhaps since childhood. Once the nose is finished growing (around age 13) a patient can opt to have rhinoplasty of their nose; though we will need to personally assess each patient to see whether or not it is appropriate to perform rhinoplasty surgery on a patient who is a minor (under 18)."

Our rhinoplasty NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Diktaban, is Double Board Certified to skillfully correct any issue of the nose. In fact, he is among the small group of Plastic Surgeons in the entire nation who are board certified in both “Ear, Nose and Throat” (ENT) as well as in “Plastic Surgery”.
He will meet with you during your free consultation to discuss your individual concerns and can recommend a proper procedure plan that would be the safest route possible while offering you the results you are looking to achieve.
Pre-Op Instructions for Our Rhinoplasty Patients
Prior to rhinoplasty surgery, we will discuss with you what medications you are taking, which should be avoided, as well as what herbal supplements should be discontinued. To read our full pre-operative instructions sheet, please visit our pre-op page found at the top of this website.
A rhinoplasty is usually done under general anesthesia unless the patient is having a non-surgical rhinoplasty using dermal fillers alone. We always have an anesthesiologist present throughout the procedure to administer the anesthesia and to monitor a patient’s vital signs. Depending upon which particular areas of the nose will be corrected, the incision will either be made inside the nose (also referred to as a “closed procedure”) which will be scar-less, or made along the place where the nostrils meet the area above the upper lip.
Corrections will be made to address each area of concern. Grafting of cartilage from another area of the body is sometimes done to build up a small nose tip or to provide inner structure to the nasal passageways for optimal air flow (such as with a deviated septum). Bone tools such as chisels and rasps (bone files) may also be used to correct bumps and humps on the top of the nose.
After surgery by our rhinoplasty New York surgeon in either our rhinoplasty NYC or Long Island center, you will have bleeding inside of the nose and may also need to wear a splint to hold the tip of the nose or the bones in their new position. Stitches will either be dissolvable or will need to be removed about 7-10 days after surgery (our cosmetic surgeon will let you know which type he used). There will be some post-operative swelling and bruising of the skin, with bruises potentially reaching underneath the eyes depending upon the extent of correction that was done.
It is a good idea to keep your head elevated at all times for the first few weeks (including when you sleep). You will be prescribed painkillers to help keep you comfortable for about the first 7-10 days and then can use Extra Strength Tylenol after that. The cosmetic surgeon may recommend the use of ice packs on and off at some point during the healing process. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for several weeks to a month and this will be discussed during your post-operative follow-up appointments.
In most cases, rhinoplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by New York state health insurance carriers. In some instances, however, medical insurance will cover deviated septum correction by an ear, nose and throat specialist (such as our rhinoplasty New York specialist, Dr. Theodore Diktaban). Though we do not accept New York medical insurance coverage as payment for cosmetic surgery procedures, we can help provide you with the documentation you will need to file a claim with your insurance carrier.
Patients in this situation are required to pay for the procedure upfront with either cash or credit (we also can help you finance with a CareCredit, MedicalFinancing.com, or Chase Health Advance account). Any reimbursement received from the insurance carrier for the covered expenses are between you and your medical insurance company.
The bottom line is that each of our rhinoplasty NYC patients is special, unique, and valued to us. We will work with you to determine what you are looking to accomplish with your rhinoplasty procedure and we will do everything necessary to help you achieve that. If you have financial constraints, we can work with you to arrive at a price that you are comfortable with and assist you with financing, should you need to finance the costs.
