This procedure is designed to offer our brow lift New York patients the ability to lift a sagging brow line and lessen the appearance of wrinkles and creases on the forehead (this is why some people call this procedure a “forehead lift”). It is a good solution for our patients who are showing signs of aging and looking to freshen up their face to give them a more youthful appearance.
Our browlift NYC surgeon, Dr. Theodore Diktaban, explains, "As we age, skin begins to lose its ability to stretch and return to its original shape. This is why we see sagging, fine lines, wrinkles, laugh lines, worry lines, etc. begin to show on our faces as we get older. Sun exposure and genetics also play a role in how 'aged' our forehead and brow areas look as we get older."
Consultation Tips
Patients should be in good physical health (able to withstand general anesthesia) and be non-smokers. We require that patients stop smoking at least two weeks prior to their procedure date and that they do not smoke again afterward. Cigarette smoking causes the blood vessels and capillaries in the skin to contract which impedes healing. It also reduces the skins elasticity which can cause fine lines and wrinkles as well as encourage the skin to sag.
What a Brow Lift (Forehead Lift) Can Do
A brow lift will:
The brow lift (forehead lift) surgery is done under general anesthesia so that you are fully sedated during the entire procedure. An anesthesiologist (anesthesia medical doctor) will sedate and monitor you closely during including your heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen levels and blood pressure. The surgical portion of the procedure will be done prior to any dermal fillers being used on the face. This allows our brow lift New York Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to see where problem areas persist after the extra skin has been removed and the upper face has been lifted to its new position.
Our brow lift surgery may be done in one of two ways; either endoscopically (with about 5 tiny incisions hidden in the hairline) or with the incision made inside of the hairline in one long incision extending from ear to ear in what is referred to as a “coronal” incision. The decision of where to place the incision is up to our browlift NYC surgeon’s discretion and depends upon the extent of correction being made to the patient’s face.
Endoscopic Brow Lift (Forehead Lift) Procedure: After the patient is anesthetized, our brow lift New York plastic surgeon places about 5 tiny incisions in the hairline, evenly spread apart along the top of the head. A surgical tool is inserted underneath the muscle layer to separate it from the bony forehead plate as well as underneath the skin to separate the skin from the muscle layer. There are several muscle groups in the face that may or may not be separated and lifted during the procedure, depending upon the patient’s need for correction: orbital orbicularis (muscles that surround the orbit of the eye), the corrugator (muscles that control eyebrow movement) and the procerus (the muscles that are located in between the eyes just above the bridge of the nose).
The endoscope is then inserted into the space between the skin and the muscle layer on the forehead. This allows our browlift NYC plastic surgeon to manipulate the skin and muscle layers independently from each other so that corrections may be made to muscular areas as needed as well as to remove extra skin. Once the extra skin has been removed, the skin is sutured into its new positions inside of the hairline and kept in place by either staples or micro-tiny screws which will be removed post-surgery.
Coronal Brow Lift Procedure: This procedure follows the same methods of correcting the skin and muscles in the forehead and brow with the difference being where the incision is placed. In this type of forehead lift procedure, the incision is made from ear to ear over the top of the head behind the hairline so that the scar is invisible. Once the muscle structures and skin have been corrected to our brow lift New York cosmetic surgeon’s liking, the skin is closed up along the incision line and either staples or micro-tiny screws are placed along the incision to hold the tissues in their new positions. These will be removed after the patient has healed enough for the tissues to hold in place on their own.
