For many people, such as new moms, diet and exercise is simply not enough to get rid of stubborn fat pockets. This is why tummy tucks are one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures available.
New research has indicated that receiving a tummy tuck can also lead to increased satiety and allow people to feel full after eating. According to a study done by experts at Alameda Hospital, “neuroendocrine mechanisms” can promote weight loss after abdominoplasty.
High Rate of Continuous Weight Loss after Abdominoplasty
The doctors kept tabs on the short and long-term weight loss of 20 women after they received tummy tucks. The average amount of abdominal tissue taken from all 20 procedures was approximately five pounds.
Fourteen of the women had sustained weight loss one year after surgery that was greater than the weight of the tissue that was taken from them. The body mass index of these 14 women decreased from about 30 to 23 one year later. A normal BMI is 18.5 to 25 and 30 or higher is considered obese.
The other six women had varying degrees of weight loss after their tummy tucks. One year later, however, they has regained weight and increased their BMI ratios.
The long-term weight loss was more prominent for women who had an initial BMI of 24.5, which is just below the borderline of being overweight.
