A breast lift is something many women desire either after they have children or as the aging process sets in. It’s a procedure that literally raises the breasts. Technically, a breast lift is called mastopexy, but most patients simply call it “a lift.”
This procedure is rather simple for experienced cosmetic and plastic surgeons. Excess skin around the breasts is removed. The remaining skin is then tightened and lifted to support the breast. Once repositioned, the breasts sit much higher and have a firmer texture.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently reported the number of breast lifts have grown 70% since 2000. This significant increase in popularity has made mastopexy more common than augmentation using implants, which used to be the most requested breast procedure.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?
A woman who desires to have her breasts lifted and is in good health is usually a good candidate for breast lift surgery. Often times, women who have sagginess due to stretching of the skin are the types of patients we see most often.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight gain are all contributing factors to the degree of sag that a woman can experience. The breasts can also start to hang lower over time, as the skin loses elasticity due to aging and gravity. Heredity can also play a role in how much of a chance a woman has of experiencing sagging breasts.
Many women wonder what will happen with their areola once the excess skin is removed and the skin around the breasts is tightened. Usually, the cosmetic or plastic surgeon will remove and tighten skin in a way that will keep the areola in a natural position. This should not be a concern for patients.
Patients who are troubled by the size of their areola will be happy to know that a breast lift can also help decrease the size of the areola. How much smaller the areola gets depends on the person, and that is a good question to ask when having a consultation with your surgeon.
