Breast augmentation surgery is a big decision. We’re glad you decided to research it, especially tips on recovering. While no two recovery experiences are the same, these pointers can help most people as they heal.
About Recovery from Breast Augmentation
Recovery time depends on a few factors. Every individual is different. Some people heal quicker than others do, and that’s okay. The time it takes to recover is not important. What’s crucial is to follow the advice of your surgeon to ensure a healthy healing process.
Besides individual differences, recovery time depends on where the breast implants were placed in the breasts. Surgeons can place the implants over either or under the muscle. When the implant is placed under the muscle (most common), recovery time is usually longer.
The technique used to place the implants into the breasts also affects recovery time. This is why it is important to choose an experienced plastic or cosmetic surgeon, such as someone from our team at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York.
Dealing with Pain
Every person will experience discomfort after breast augmentation. Usually, over-the-counter pain relievers are sufficient to handle the pain after several days have passed. Your surgeon will prescribe a limited amount of prescription painkillers for the first few days.
If the pain becomes unbearable or doesn’t subside with pain relievers, speak to your plastic or cosmetic surgeon about it. There may be an infection or other issue causing the severe pain. This requires immediate medical attention.
Have Patience with the Look and Feel of New Breast Implants
Many patients are surprised at how high the implants sit after the surgery. Others may be concerned because their nipples appear as though they are pointing down. This is only temporary. As the implants settle into place in the breasts, the skin will stretch to accommodate, and the nipples will adjust.
Breasts can feel quite hard after surgery. This is also temporary. The implants will soften as they settle. Since they are implants, don’t expect them to feel exactly like breast tissue. It’s nearly impossible to replicate the feel of fat using breast implants (though silicone implants are the softest).
If this is a concern of yours, you may want to consider fat transfer to the breasts. Also called a “natural breast augmentation,” fat transfer can increase the size of your breasts, and since it’s fat being injected into the breasts, they will feel completely natural (because they are!).
Usually, by 6 weeks, most patients report their breasts look much more normal and feel soft, so they are no longer concerned.
