Botox Treatments for Migraine:
In our Long Island plastic surgery and New York City practices, we use BOTOX® Cosmetic as an excellent, long lasting wrinkle reducer. Since it became available, men and women all over the world have new options for putting off surgical procedures while maintaining a more youthful appearance.
Because of its immense success in reducing the look of crow’s feet and other fine lines on the face, other beneficial uses of BOTOX® receive far less attention. They are, nonetheless, extremely welcome by those who need help in certain non-cosmetic areas.
While we use BOTOX in both our Long Island plastic surgery clinic and New York City practices to bring patients back to a more youthful appearance, the treatment is also highly effective at treating migraines. In the past, treating migraines has been quite a challenge for medical practitioners.
How BOTOX and Migraine Treatment Works
These intense headaches have a wide variety of triggers and symptoms, which include nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sometimes vomiting. It’s very interesting that doctors aren’t completely sure just how BOTOX relieves the symptoms of migraine headaches. The widely believed theory is that the injections simply block pain signals from reaching nerve endings and therefore the patient feels better.
Traditionally, migraine headaches have been difficult, if not impossible, to treat in some patients. They’re typically accompanied by a variety of unwelcome symptoms including dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light and vomiting.
And, while doctors remain uncertain as to exactly how BOTOX injections (typically injected into seven areas around the temples, forehead, neck and shoulders) really work to ease the symptoms, the prevailing theory is that it prevents pain signals from reaching nerve endings.
During a BOTOX migraine treatment, your doctor may administer an injection to the forehead, neck, and/or shoulders. This is dependent on where you feel pain and tension the most. The botulinum toxin is believed to reduce muscle tension and therefore minimize the strain on the nervous system.
By receiving BOTOX injections at regular intervals (every three months, as recommended by the FDA), patients may eliminate the worry that migraines will occur unexpectedly. While the goal is to eliminate debilitating migraines with BOTOX treatment in our centers, there may be side effects associated with these injections.
Common temporary side effects include sensitivity or slight discomfort at the injection site, light bruising or swelling and possible bleeding. Most patients who report side effects state that they are mild.

It is difficult to determine just how many injections or sessions a patient will require to lessen the severity of headaches. When consulting with our cosmetic surgery New York City or plastic surgery doctors regarding the viability of this treatment, remember to discuss the frequency of migraines as well as the specific areas of pain and other symptoms you have. Using your medical history as a guide, you and your doctor can devise the optimal plan for treatment. A visit to your primary care doctor or neurologist may be required.
