ASAPS Offers Tips on How to Find the Right Plastic Surgeon by A. Abraham Levin, MD

In a beautiful new infographic released in their Smart Beauty Guide, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) explains how to find a qualified plastic surgeon.

They feature eight qualities (check out the infographic here) that everyone should consider before choosing a surgeon:

  1. Credentials
  2. Additional Training
  3. Setting
  4. Hospital Privileges
  5. Experience
  6. Comfort Factor
  7. Information
  8. Follow-Up

Here’s a bit more information about each of these points to help you make the very best decision.

Plastic Surgeon Credentials and Where Surgery Takes Place

If you live in the United States, you’ll want to be sure the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This organization ensures that each doctor they certify has complete knowledge and training in every area of plastic surgery.

Additional training is extremely valuable, including membership with ASAPS because this means that not only is the surgeon Board Certified (as described above), but they have gone above and beyond by meeting other requirements such as continuing education and extensive experience.

Where surgery takes place is extremely important to your overall safety. If you’ll be having surgery in the doctor’s surgery center, make sure it is accredited by a “recognized agency”. In New York State, the agency that grants accreditation is the AAAHC, or Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York is AAAHC accredited.

When surgery cannot be performed in an outpatient surgery center, the surgeon should have hospital privileges so that surgery can be done in the hospital setting.

Experience, Comfort, Information, & Follow-Up

The plastic surgeon you choose should have specific experience (we recommend at least 5-10 years) performing the procedure you want. Additionally, be sure to look at before and after photos to see the doctor’s results.

Just like any relationship, it’s very important to have chemistry with the doctor and that you feel comfortable with them. Do they tell you upfront about the risks versus the benefits of your procedure? Does he or she take the time to instruct you on what your post-op experience will be like? Make sure they do!

Their follow-up procedures are also very important. What if you’re unhappy with your results? Will the surgeon perform revisions or touch-ups at no additional cost? Do follow up visits come with your surgery price? Make sure you get solid answers to these questions.
